Industry competitions and scholarships are a fantastic way to broaden your knowledge and perspective of the insurance industry, and to boost your reputation and exposure amongst your peers and associates.

Below are a selection of Australia and New Zealand  industry competitions and scholarships, which you may wish to consider applying for.



AILA Ron Shorter Memorial Award May The Ron Shorter Memorial Award was established in 2012 and is a competition to assist young insurance industry professionals to develop their public speaking skills.

Participants also benefit by raising their profile, speaking publicly on an insurance topic of their choice and meeting peers and luminaries from the insurance industry. Additionally, there are a number of prizes awarded including the Ron Shorter Memorial Award trophy.

Aon Benfield Scholarship April Run annually the Aon Benfield Scholarship was established by Aon Benfield and ANZIIF. The award aims to strengthen links between Australian and New Zealand insurance professionals and their international counterparts, and to develop the knowledge of the global reinsurance markets among insurance practitioners in Australia and New Zealand.
ANZIIF Turkslegal Claims Scholarship October The annual ANZIIF and TurksLegal Claims Scholarship provides a career development opportunity for professionals working in general insurance. Entrants must be Australian residents, work directly in general insurance and be based in Australia. Entry is not open to lawyers, accountants or medico-legal consultants, employed in capacities other than as direct employees of a general insurance company (this includes reinsurance companies or insurance claims management companies).
APIG Wotton + Kearney Scholarship August The annual Wotton + Kearney APIG Scholarship supports the development of young professionals practising in professional indemnity and financial lines insurance in Australia.

The scholarship recognises an outstanding contribution to the industry each year and is open to current APIG members under the age of 36 who are actively involved in financial lines insurance, and who will significantly benefit from the scholarship experience.

Candidates are required to produce a brief submission outlining their background in financial lines insurance and their views on the industry from a perspective that affects them. Submissions will be judged by a panel comprising four members of the APIG National Committee and a representative from Wotton + Kearney.

ICNZ & ANZIIF Scholarship October The ICNZ and ANZIIF Scholarship was established to recognise and reward business and leadership potential and to provide an exciting professional development opportunity for young New Zealand insurance professionals.
Insurance Business - Young Guns Award June The annual Young Guns report collates a list of the top 50 up-and-comers in the industry, as voted for by their employers and peers – the talented young insurance professionals on track to be tomorrow’s leaders.
NIBA Mentoring Program July The NIBA mentoring program is for young brokers, insurers, and associated professionals across the insurance industry. The aim of the program is to empower Young Professionals through mentoring partnerships with supportive and motivating industry role models to develop focused goals and directions and to strive for higher levels of performance. Mentoring programs are now available twice a year in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.
NIBA Young Broker of the Year Award / Warren Tickle Award Each year NIBA celebrates the achievement and contribution of an outstanding member through the Young Professional Broker of the Year Award at regional level and the Warren Tickle Memorial Award at national level. In association with Vero, the award represents the pinnacle of achievement for the nation's young broker community.
